Actor Rajpal Yadav isa small man who seems to have made a big difference to the world of films.
If Priyadarshan wants him inhis movies, David Dhawan and Ram Gopal Varma can’t do without him.“It’s all God’s doing. And the masses’. I’m herebecause of them,” he states humbly. So does he consider himself anachiever of sorts? “Not quite,” Rajpal tells us, “The journeybegan with the sole objective to be a good actor.Today the goals have doubled.I want to be a good actor and a great human being.”
Now that we are done with the‘good’ part of it all, critic bashing is the name of the game, too.
And Rajpal hasn’t beenspared the critics’ blatant opinions and accusations of being a little‘over-the-top’ lately. “I don’t know if I ought to takethe blame,” says Yadav, “Sometimes ideas get miscommunicated. MaybeI haven’t understood what the director wanted, or then maybe the audiencehasn’t understood what the director wanted, or maybe the directorhasn’t understood what he wanted. So there are varied possibilities there.But we all are learning. So that’s good.”
But what’s not so goodis the boredom that has set in with the actor doing predictable Rajpal stuff. Wewant to see more of ‘Undertrials’, you know! “Sure, very soonyou’ll see me doing a variety of roles, and each one will bechallenging.” Is it his small stature that makes him the‘butt’ of all films? “Everyone is born with attributes —some which can be modified and some which can’t. I can’t do muchabout my height or body structure.
But I can do a lot with mymind and acting talent, and try and make up for what people think is a‘limitation’. But that makes me ‘unique’.” Wellsaid, we say.
So the toughestpart of being an actor is...? “To be able to please everyone at alltimes,” he explains, “We are required to respond to people in amanner in which they think we ought to respond.”
Talking about response, how dothe girls respond to Rajpal? “Girls find me very sexy,” he saysmatter-of-factly. “Not many people know that as per a poll conducted onValentine’s Day, I was among the top ten celebrities, girls would like totake out on a date!” An ego booster? “It’s not to be taken tooseriously, but it’s not to be ignored either, you know,” he tells uslaughing.
